Locals have arrested a young man named Md. Mirajuddin (32) for allegedly breaking a Saraswati idol under construction by entering a temple in Faridpur and pushing it. The president of the temple committee has filed a case as the plaintiff in the incident. After the case, the young man has been sent to court. Kotwali Police Station OC Md. Asaduzzaman confirmed the matter of the case on Saturday (February 1, 2025) afternoon.

Earlier, the incident took place at the Kali temple in Bhatilakshipur area of Faridpur city at around 11 pm on Friday. The Kotwali police took the youth into custody at around 12:30 am that day. He is a resident of Bazedpur village in Basantpur union of Rajbari Sadar upazila. He rides an easy bike in Faridpur city and lives in a rented house in the Rajbari road intersection area of the city.

Talking to the temple committee members, it was learned that the veranda of the Kali temple in Bhatilakhipur area of Faridpur city is surrounded by a brick wall about 4 feet high and the main gate in front is made of rods. However, since there is no brickwork on some parts of the temple, anyone can easily enter the veranda of the temple. The temple is located next to a road in Bhatilakhipur. Temple committee president Nimai Chandra Malo has filed a case with the police station as a complainant in this incident. Temple committee member Ramchandra Malo said that the idol was made on the occasion of Saraswati Puja next Monday (February 3).

On Friday, at around 11 am, an empty easy bike stopped in front of the temple. Then the driver of the easy bike entered the veranda of the temple and pushed the under-construction Saraswati idol away. Later, the locals arrested him and handed him over to the police. He said that this same person had broken the Saraswati idol of the Faridpur Shri Shri Radha Govinda ISKCON temple on February 7, 2024. At that time, he was released as crazy.

26-second CCTV footage of the temple shows a man leaving his easy bike in front of the temple, entering the temple’s veranda, pushing the Saraswati idol from behind, and breaking it.

Samar Mondal, a student of Rajendra College who lives in a hostel adjacent to the temple, said, “This idol was made by a potter for Saraswati Puja on a contract of 6 thousand taka. We live in a hostel next to this temple. Many of us students wanted to perform Saraswati Puja here. We also invited friends for this. But this idol was broken at such a time that we could not even find time to repair it.”Confirming the truth of the incident, Faridpur Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Asaduzzaman said, the youth who was arrested by locals in the incident of vandalism of Pratima was taken into police custody at night. Today, Saturday, the temple committee president filed a case as the plaintiff.

Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Shailen Chakma said, it is proven that the youth committed the incident. After the case was filed, the youth was arrested and sent to court. News source kalerkantho
