
After the untimely death of her husband, Lucky Rani Dey, along with managing the family, was raising five cows. She had planned to sell the cows to meet the family expenses and the education expenses of her two daughters. In need of money, she recently sold one cow. In the meantime, miscreants have broken the lock of the cowshed and stolen the remaining four cows. In this situation, Lucky has become destitute.
Lucky Rani is a resident of Uttar Bhabanipur village in Paschim Juri Union of Juri Upazila of Moulvibazar. Her husband Prashant had a paan stall in the Bhabaniganj Bazar bus stand area of the upazila’s sadar. He died of a sudden heart attack about three years ago. The well-organized family was destroyed. After that, Lucky took over the reins of the family. Their elder daughter Riya Rani Dey will now take the SSC exam. The younger daughter Ruhi Rani Dey is studying in the fifth grade.
On Sunday (March 02, 2025) afternoon, when went to Lucky’s house, saw that a wedding ceremony was being held in a neighboring house. There was no joy in Lucky’s house. There was silence. Showing the barn with a tin roof and bamboo fence in front of the house, Lucky said that due to financial difficulties, she sold an ox for 35,000 taka 10-15 days ago. There were two cows and two calves. After eating on the night of February 28, 2025, the whole family went to sleep. The next morning, March 1, 2025, she woke up and found the barn door unlocked. The cows were not inside. While saying this, Lucky burst into tears.
Wiping her eyes with her saree, Lucky Rani said, “The cows were a source of danger. The family needs to be run. The eldest daughter has exams. Books and accounts, private tuition are required. A lot of expenses. I thought I would sell the cows to support the family and pay for the children’s education. It’s all over. Thieves killed the death people.” Prashant’s brother Bechan Dey said that after filing a written complaint at the Juri police station, the police visited the scene.
Local residents say that at least 30 incidents of cow theft occurred in different areas of the upazila in February. In some of these incidents, written complaints were filed with the police station. Admitting the matter, Juri Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Morshedul Alam Bhuiyan said that each incident of theft is being investigated. Those involved in this act will be identified and legal action will be taken against them. The OC said that police patrols have been increased at night.
