A Union Parishad (UP) member named Basna Mallick (50) in Narail Sadar has been accused of being gang-raped and murdered by pouring poison in her mouth. Her body was taken to her home from Jessore General Hospital on Friday (December 27) evening.
The deceased Basna Mallick was a female member of the reserved wards 1, 2, 3 of Maijpara Union in Narail Sadar and the wife of Nepal Mallick of Poradanga village in that union. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Narail Sadar Police Station Md. Sajedul Islam confirmed the death of UP member Basna to Somoy News. The family of the deceased claimed that on Tuesday (December 24) morning, after distributing TCB goods, she went to collect the money owed to her on the phone from a local youth named Md Rajibul. At the house of Md Moktar Molla in Daulatpur village of Maijpara Union, Md Rajibul, Md Faruk, Md Chanchal, Md Shafiqul gang-raped her, recorded a video and demanded a ransom of two lakh taka.
When the victim, Basana Mallick, threatened to report the matter, poison was poured into her mouth. She did not tell anyone about the incident after returning home due to fear. Later, when she fell ill, she was admitted to Jessore General Hospital on Wednesday (December 25) morning. At that time, she told her son Rinku Mallick about the torture on her and the names of those involved. She died on Thursday (December 26) night while undergoing treatment.
According to eyewitness accounts and complaints from relatives, UP member Basana Mallick was subjected to organized torture. Md Moktar Molly’s wife Mrs Sahida and daughter-in-law Sonia, who witnessed the incident, told Somoy News, “Member Basana was coming, they called her and took her to our house (accused Md Rajibul, Md Shafiqul, Md Chanchal, Md Faruk). Then she wanted to leave but she was forcibly detained. They forced us out of the house and locked the door.
Relatives are crying bitterly after losing Basana Mallick. The atmosphere at home has become heavy with their wailing. Basana Mallick’s 80-year-old mother Sundari Haldar is lamenting with a picture in her hand, “Where is my mother, where is my mother?” Expressing anger over the unnatural death of such a popular public representative, the locals and her colleagues have demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits. However, despite repeated attempts to contact the accused to find out the truth about the incident, no statement was received.
Narail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Sajedul Islam told Somoy News, Jessore Kotwali Police Station informed us that UP member Basana Mallick had traces of poison in her stomach and evidence of multiple people having forced physical relations with her. After receiving this information, we immediately reached the spot. The matter will be investigated properly to uncover the real mystery of the incident and the culprits will be brought to justice.
