Police have arrested a young man named Md. Rifat Hossain (20) on charges of beating a priest.
An allegation has been made of an attack on a priest during a Mahanaam yagna ceremony in Baraharipur Poddarpara village of Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur. On Friday (February 21, 2025), the priest, Brahmin Jameni Kanta Mahanta (80), who was injured in the incident, was first sent to the Upazila Health Complex. From there, doctors sent him to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. A young man named Rifat Hossain (20) of Mandalpara village of Shalandar in the same union involved in the incident was arrested and handed over to the police by the villagers. He has been arrested under Section 151 and sent to court. He is a first-year student of a local college. Police were later deployed at the scene to continue the ceremony.
Manik Chandra Roy, son of the president of the yagna, Prafulla Roy, a school teacher, said that like every year, the villagers organized a two-day program (Ashtaprohar). During the program on Friday, Rifat hit the Brahmin on the head with a screwdriver. He was taken to the hospital in a bloody state. After the incident, local residents including Union BNP President Md. Afsar Ali and General Secretary Ekramul Haque rushed to the spot. At that time, Rifat was handed over to the police.
BNP leader Ekramul Haque said, according to family sources, Rifat has been suffering from mental problems for several months. His medical papers have been sent to the police station. BNP has taken necessary measures to ensure that there is no problem in conducting the yagna ceremony. Duty officer of Parbatipur Model Police Station, Phul Miah, said, a young man named Rifat Hossain was brought to the police station in connection with the attack on a Brahmin.
