Police have arrested a Hindu youth in Doarabazar, Sunamganj, on charges of insulting religion in a Facebook post. He was arrested on Tuesday night (December 03, 24) and taken to the police station. The incident has created tension in the area. The name of the arrested youth is Akash Das. He is a resident of Monglarpur village in Doarabazar upazila. A case is being prepared against him. A charge of insulting religion has been filed against him.
Police said that around 8 pm on Tuesday, the local Muslim crowd became angry over a post by the young man on Facebook. There were also allegations of vandalism of Akash’s house. Later, around 9 pm, the police arrested him and brought him to the Doarabazar police station. At that time, the agitated crowd started protesting outside the police station. Later, the army and police members calmed the agitated crowd. Upon receiving the news of the incident, senior administration officials including the District Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and local political leaders visited the scene. They appealed to everyone in the area to remain calm. Security has been tightened in the entire area since the incident.
Doarabazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahidul Islam said, the accused youth has been arrested. When tension arose among the angry crowd, the police and the army brought the situation under control. Upon receiving the news of the incident, Superintendent of Police AFM Anwar Hossain Khan visited the scene.
Doarabazar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Meher Nigar Tonu said the situation is now calm. Police and army members have intensified patrols. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Ilias Mia visited the scene. He requested everyone to be patient and calm and said that no one should take the law into their own hands.
