Two young women have been accused of being forcibly gang-raped in the Khowai River embankment area adjacent to Notun Bridge in Shayestaganj, Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj district. The rape incident took place on Karimpur road last Wednesday (January 15, 2025). The two young women who were raped are their cousins. On Friday night, the two sisters who were tortured filed a complaint with Chunarughat police station. Meanwhile, the Chunarughat police station has arrested a young man named Parvez Miah (22) in connection with the rape incident.
Police arrested him in a raid in Ubahata area of Shayestaganj on Friday night. The arrested Parvez is the son of Manik Miah of that village. The two young women, who were victims, are residents of Nabiganj upazila. They are cousins of each other. The two sisters work as housemaids at the house of a relative of theirs in the capital, Moghbazar.
The two young women said that on January 15, around 12:00 am, they got off at the Shayestaganj Notun Bridge intersection from Dhaka. Later, the two sisters reserved CNG from Kamal, son of Ostar Miah of Ubahata village, for a contract of 500 taka. At 12:30 am, they left for their home in Debpara, Nabiganj, by auto-rickshaw (CNG). As soon as they reached the Notun Bridge, CNG driver Kamal Mia mentioned Bye Road and got off the highway and entered the Karimpur road at the Khowai River embankment. Near the bridge, they went to the embankment adjacent to Karimpur and stopped the CNG.
At that time, Kamal’s friends Raihan, Parvez and Shiblu alias Sharif were with them. There, they were forcibly gang-raped against their will. Later, they looted their belongings including gold ornaments worth 1 lakh 59 thousand taka. At that time, when they started shouting, the gang fled. Later, they came from there in a state of illness and informed the locals and reached home in another car. After going home, the two sisters informed their family members about the matter.
Meanwhile, the accused Parvez said that he did not rape and did not take money, everything was done by his friend Kamal. The relatives of the two sisters said that four people tortured them inhumanly and took away their money. The rapists need strict punishment. At the time of writing this report, the two young women are in police custody. Another source said that the gang is doing various misdeeds at the New Bridge Point late at night, including misbehaving with passengers while driving. The passengers are ordinary people who are fed up with their torture.
Chunarughat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nur Alam said, “Upon receiving information about the incident, we visited the scene and arrested one person, and a drive is underway to arrest the others involved.” Source-janomot
It is worth noting that no news has revealed the detailed identities of the two girls and their families. However, a post on social media platform Facebook titled “Gang rape of minority Hindu girl on the night before her wedding” is being posted demanding justice for the perpetrators. WHSC
